Statement Regarding Labour and Delivery Unit at Horizon's The Moncton Hospital

Download this video here.

Today Horizon Health Network would like to inform our patients, their families and the public of an ongoing criminal investigation involving a Registered Nurse at Horizon's The Moncton Hospital.

Following an internal investigation, we had strong evidence leading us to believe a registered nurse on the labour and delivery unit inappropriately administered a drug called oxytocin causing two patients to require an urgent caesarian section.

Horizon took immediate action upon discovering this issue and launched an investigation, arriving at this outcome.

We have disclosed this situation to both patients and their families.

We can confirm the two mothers and their babies are safe and doing well.

When used appropriately, oxytocin is a drug that causes contractions of the uterus to start labour, increases the speed of labour, and stops bleeding following delivery.

While in the labour and delivery unit, the administration of oxytocin caused both of these mothers to require urgent C-sections. The staff and physicians responded immediately to this need and their quick actions are to be commended.

We have notified the RCMP. They have launched an investigation and have our full cooperation.  Also, based on our findings, we have terminated the employee and notified the Nurses Association of New Brunswick.

We regret that this situation took place at our hospital and we sincerely empathise with the patients, families and staff that are affected.

At Horizon, our goal is to always provide safe and quality care to all of our patients and their families. It is for this reason this incident is so troubling to all of our staff.

On behalf of Horizon we would like to apologize to the patients and families affected by the actions of our former employee.

I would also like to assure all expectant mothers that they should not have any hesitations about the care provided at Horizon's The Moncton Hospital.

We encourage our patients to feel comfortable in asking questions about their pregnancy, labour and delivery. Patients and families can call 1-844-225-0220 and we will ensure you speak to a member of our obstetrics team.

This is a difficult time for the affected patients and their families. It is not a situation a new parent wants to experience. We ask that the media please respect their privacy.

We felt it was important to disclose this information today, however this is an ongoing investigation by the RCMP. We do not want to compromise the investigation, and will be not be commenting any further at this time.
