New Location for P.E.E.R. SJ

(SAINT JOHN) December 17, 2019 - Horizon Health Network (Horizon) staff and community partners were on hand to welcome area residents, parents and youth at an open house recently to celebrate P.E.E.R. SJ's new space located at 28 Richmond Street in the Teen Resource Centre (TRC) in Uptown Saint John.

P.E.E.R. SJ, which stands for Peers Engaged in Education and Recovery, is a community-based, addiction and mental health service focusing on a positive future for young adults. Horizon staff work with young adults, between the ages of 16 and 25, to help them meet goals such as returning to school, finding employment, making friends, healthy lifestyle choices and living independently.

"The open house was a wonderful opportunity to show people our new location, thank our donors who made the relocation possible, as well as explain our customizable counselling approach to support our youth," said Renée Fournier, Horizon's Addictions and Mental Health manager for the Saint John area. "The program has had such a positive effect for youth in the Saint John community, and we are pleased to continue delivering these services from our new location."

Horizon's P.E.E.R. SJ opened in 2012 at its previous location on Duke Street. Over the past two years, approximately 200 young individuals have benefitted from its care team of social workers, human service counsellors and peer support workers on-site and during wellness fairs, school lunch breaks and other outreach activities.

Referrals are not needed to access their services, as youth can simply walk in, come with a friend, or be referred by a health care professional.

An overview of services provided by P.E.E.R. SJ is explained in this video posted to Horizon's Community News Channel.

To learn more about one client's inspirational journey toward wellness and recovery thanks in part to the services she was able to access at P.E.E.R. SJ, check out our latest Horizon Story, featuring peer mentor Tara O'Toole.

P.E.E.R. SJ is a Horizon program that is funded by different partners including the Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH) Foundation, ACCESS OM, RBC Children's Mental Health Project and Medavie Health Foundation. The relocation of the service to Richmond Street was made possible by the donation from the SJRH Foundation and MindCare.
