Horizon supports community organizations with recognition awards

(Horizon) Dec. 12, 2019 - Horizon Health Network (Horizon) is seeking nominations and applications for the 2020 Community Health Recognition Awards.

For the fourth year in a row, Horizon is celebrating individuals and organizations who are making a difference to improve health and wellness in their community.

"Each year, it's truly inspiring to learn about these individuals and groups who work so hard at creating healthier communities," said Karen McGrath, President and CEO of Horizon. "I encourage you to share your story with us either by sending in an application or by nominating people, programs or services that are creating change by focusing on priority health issues."

A total of 15 awards are handed out by Horizon, three each for the Fredericton, Miramichi, Moncton, Saint John and Upper River Valley areas. Winners receive a certificate, a glass award and $500 to support their work to help people be healthy.

After three successful years, the award categories have been refreshed. It is expected that with the new categories, the reach of the awards will expand to include more individuals and groups that are having a positive impact on the health of their community, including those who have previously applied.

New this year, are the Health and Wellness category and Community Champion category. Health and Wellness is all encompassing for programs or services that promote healthy living and wellness. That means, addressing the unique needs of a community or a population within a community like seniors, youth or multicultural organizations.

The Community Champion category recognizes a member of the community who builds engagement by implementing programs, services or initiatives that address the many personal, social, economic and environmental factors that determine individual and population health.

For the second year, Horizon will accept submissions for the Physicians category. Once again, as important contributors to helping people be healthy, physicians can be nominated for their work with community-based programs or initiatives outside of their practice.

"The Community Health Recognition Awards are Horizon's way of thanking the people and programs that work every day to improve the overall health of communities," said Jean Daigle, VP of Community for Horizon. "There is no doubt this is hard work, but my hope is that you find Horizon's recognition of your efforts to foster change truly rewarding and validating. Be proud of the work you're doing."

Application forms, nomination forms, a breakdown of criteria, and more information can found at HorizonNB.ca/awards . Submissions are due by Feb. 13, 2020 and winners will be announced in April at Horizon's quarterly Board meeting.
