17th Annual Safe Kids Fun Day and Expo

(SAINT JOHN) May 28, 2013 - Children of all ages are invited to come out and celebrate Safe Kids Week on Saturday, June 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Rockwood Park Kiwanis Play Park.

The fun day will include music, activities, displays and demonstrations as well as free wagon rides and a barbeque.

Safe Kids Week runs from May 27 to June 2. This year's theme is concussions. Brain injury in children and youth can interfere with the way their brain works and develops and can affect critical skills students need in their daily activities, such as concentrating on school work.

Concussions are the most common type of brain injury caused by trauma. Any blow to the head, face or neck, or a blow to the body, such as a ball to the head in soccer or being checked into the boards in hockey, which causes a sudden jarring of the brain inside the skull, may cause a concussion.

The event is hosted by the Greater Saint John Safe Kids Committee, which includes the N.B. Trauma Program, Saint John Regional Hospital's Child Life Program, the Saint John Fire Department, City of Saint John Leisure Services, Saint John Energy and the Kiwanis Club of Saint John.

In the event of rain, activities will be held inside the Rockwood Park Interpretations Centre, located next to the duck pond.
