Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Cardiac rehabilitation is an education and exercise program that helps people gain information about how to manage their disease through lifestyle modification. Health-care professionals from The Moncton Hospital such as nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians and pharmacists are available to provide information to you.

Who should attend Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Those people who have heart disease and need help in adapting heart healthy behaviours.

What is involved?

This free program runs over a period of twelve weeks and involves supervised exercise at The Moncton Hospital or a supervised home exercise program. Classes are held to provide information about heart disease and how to improve risk factors associated with heart disease.

How do I access this program?

Your family physician or cardiologist can make the referral to the program for you. Once the referral is received, a health-care professional will contact you to set up an initial visit.

Your physician or cardiologist can refer you to the program either before leaving hospital or after you have been discharged.

The referral is sent to a nurse who will review the information. The nurse will contact you to set up an appointment. At this first appointment you will meet with a nurse and physiotherapist who will check your heart rate, blood pressure, listen to your heart and lungs, and assess your current level of fitness.

Depending upon how fit you are, they will recommend different exercise options for you. The program requires a twelve-week commitment from participants. Spouses and family members are welcome to attend classes with you.
