Saint John Emergency Mental Health

Emergency Mental Health offers consultative/assessment services to individuals who are suffering from a moderate - acute episode of mental illness and who seek emergency care through the hospital's Emergency Department.

Individuals are referred to Emergency Mental Health Services from one of the following sources: 

  • The Emergency Room Physician after being medically cleared
  • Mental Health Mobile Crisis staff
  • Community-based physicians or psychiatrists
  • Mental Health Crisis staff in outlying areas

Specialized Emergency Mental Health staff provides assessment and treatment services which may include but are not limited to:

  • Assessment of the presenting crisis
  • Consultation by the Emergency on-call psychiatrist
  • Arrangement for inpatient admission if recommended by the psychiatrist
  • Liaison with referral sources in the community
  • Referral to community-based services when appropriate

Hours of Operation

Nursing Service 8 a.m. to midnight. Emergency on-call psychiatrist 24 /7
