Saint John Regional Hospital celebrates opening of renovated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
(SAINT JOHN) January 25, 2013 - Horizon Health Network held a celebration today to open the renovated Neonatal Intensive Care unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital, which will be fully operational on Wednesday, January 30, 2013.
The unit enables staff and physicians to care for critically ill and premature babies in a family friendly environment, with advanced standards of health care and state-of-the-art technology.
"The renovated Neonatal Intensive Care unit will help us offer quality health services to people living in the area," said Health Minister Hugh Flemming. "This illustrates how partnerships between government and foundations are significant because they allow us to accomplish important projects such as this one."
The $2 million renovation project features specialized equipment, 14 patient care rooms and three hostel rooms for mothers who must remain in hospital to care for their babies and prepare for the transition home. More than 500 babies are admitted to the unit every year.
"Renovations to the Neonatal Intensive Care unit were a collaborative effort supported by Horizon Health Network, the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, and the Department of Health," said Donald J. Peters, President and CEO of Horizon Health Network. "This opening is a great example of how, together, our focus is to provide the best possible care and comfort to our patients."
"It was with great pride that we announced our last, best, Rally of Hope campaign back in 2009 to benefit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit," said Judy Mitchell, Campaign Chair for Rally of Hope 2009. "We are grateful to our community and supporters for raising over $1.6 million for the Women and Children's Health Program at the Saint John Regional Hospital and for making it our most successful campaign to date."
