Oromocto Family Health Team announced

(OROMOCTO) January 23, 2013 - "Implementing family health teams is a key strategy of A Primary Health Care Framework for New Brunswick," said Health Minister Hugh Flemming. "This new team will provide patient-centred care to residents from Oromocto and surrounding communities including Oromocto First Nation. Providing better access to primary health care will go a long way toward improving the health of those living in the area."

The clinic will be located at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown which will renovate an existing space to house the team. The family health team will be comprised of a physician, two nurse practitioners, nurses, dieticians and a social worker, and will partner with other community health professionals and community agencies to provide other public health, mental health, addictions and wellness services.

The Department of Health will provide $270,000 in start-up money and an additional $410,000 per year to fund staffing and administration of the clinic.

In 2009 the Health Care Advisory Committee for Oromocto and Surrounding Area, a stakeholder group funded by the Department of Health, conducted a needs assessment of primary health care in the area. The assessment found:

  • high rates of obesity (72 per cent reporting overweight or obese);
  • an increased need for access to mental health and addictions services;
  • health professionals cited the need to move towards an interdisciplinary health care team model;
  • poor access to primary health care, especially for military families due to the nature of the posting rotations which is a problem across Canada.

"The establishment of primary health-care teams across the Horizon Health Network is a direct result of strong partnerships, collaboration and a shared vision to provide our patients with the best possible access to primary health care within their own communities," said Donald J. Peters, president and chief executive officer of Horizon Health Network.

This is the second family health team in the province. The Miramichi Family Health Team was announced in November 2012.

The new family health team will provide primary health care services to about 3,000 patients and is expected to open when renovations at the base are complete.
