N.B. Doctors Cycling Against Cancer begin their five-day cycle

(HORIZON) June 25, 2018 - The fourth annual N.B. Doctors Cycling Against Cancer event has officially begun. The physician-led team of cyclists began their five-day cycle this morning, leaving from Horizon Health Network's (Horizon) Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic at The Moncton Hospital (TMH) at 9 a.m.

Karen McGrath, Horizon President and CEO, commended the cyclists on their efforts.

"It is inspiring to watch this group of health care professionals cycle for a cause they believe in," she said. "Horizon patients should feel comfort knowing their oncology team is dedicated to improving patient care."

"Cancer is a long battle and I am constantly moved by the strength and courage of my patients," said Dr. Mohammed Harb, a Horizon Medical Oncologist and event founder. "They inspired me to start this fundraiser as a way for my colleagues and I to give back and help them on their journey. This is one small way we can improve their experience."

In its first three years, the event raised over $183,000 was raised to enhance patient care at Horizon's Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic. These funds have directly improved care for cancer patients by investing in vital signs monitors, blood pressure monitors, an electrocardiogram (ECG), and a device that provides early detection of cancer in the lymph nodes. Patients' loved ones also benefited through the purchase of sleeper chairs to keep them comfortable through long hospital stays.

"Each year, this event is growing significantly," said Ruth Dunnett, Administrative Director, Horizon's The Moncton Hospital. "It is remarkable to see how our communities come together to cheer on our cyclists. Each donation enhances patient care and has already made a significant difference through the purchase of much needed equipment. "

During the 2017-18 fiscal year, Horizon's Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic had 17,440patient visits, an increase from 8,271 visits 10 years ago. This number continues to increase as patients live longer thanks to new innovation and treatments. Rapidly-changing technology and advancements in cancer care means there is a need to constantly update equipment, making events such as this so important.

The cyclists began their five-day journey at Horizon's The Moncton Hospital and will visit three other Horizon locations along their route. For the first time since the ride began cyclists will visit the Sackville Memorial Hospital, today June 25, around 11:30 a.m. They will depart from the Miramichi Regional Hospital Wednesday, June 27 at 9:30 a.m. and depart from the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton Thursday, June 28 at 9 a.m.

Donations can be made online at nbdocscac.co/how-to-donate, by mail to the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation (135 MacBeath Ave., Moncton, NB, E1C 6Z8), in person at the Friend's Kiosk located in the main lobby at TMH, or by calling 506-857-5488.
