Efficiencies continue to be found in health-care system
(UPPER RIVER VALLEY) March 25, 2013 - This afternoon, Horizon Health Network (Horizon) announced that the surgery program at the Hotel-Dieu of St. Joseph in Perth-Andover will close on April 30, 2013. Surgical services will continue to be offered nearby at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville.
"To build a strong, sustainable health-care system for New Brunswickers, we have to make smart decisions on how we allocate our resources efficiently and effectively without impacting the quality and safety of patient care," said John McGarry, President and CEO of Horizon Health Network. "The decision to close the surgical program at the Hotel-Dieu of St. Joseph was made after a comprehensive review of the program's utilization and operational costs."
Horizon has been given an aggressive target to deliver health care at a cost closer to the national average by 2017. The closure of the surgery program at the Hotel-Dieu of St. Joseph is projected to save Horizon $1 million each year.
"My commitment to efficiency began at the top of the organization with the formation of a new leadership team to focus on the accountability and strategic direction required to meet the aggressive financial targets we've been given," said McGarry. "I will continue to work with my executive management team and Board to find efficiencies in the health-care system that will not impact patient care."
Horizon will continue to work with the Department of Health to plan for a replacement for the Hotel-Dieu of St. Joseph, which sustained extensive structural damage during the March 2012 flood.
"With the support of the public and our dedicated staff and physicians, we are confident in our ability to move forward and shape our health-care system to meet the needs of our patients," said McGarry.
