Interprofessional Health Research Day presentations set for March 24 at Saint John Regional Hospital
(SAINT JOHN) - Health professionals, academics and post-graduate students from all disciplines will present their research findings during Interprofessional Health Research (iHR) Day at Saint John Regional Hospital Friday, March 24, 2017.
Hosted by Horizon Health Network, UNB Saint John, New Brunswick Community College and Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick, the event will showcase a wide range of research happening throughout the province on topics such as psychology, oncology, emergency medicine, nursing, endocrinology, and cardiology.
The keynote address, titled Medical Cannabis and Pain: The science behind the stories, will be presented by Dr. Mark Ware, director of clinical research at the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit of the McGill University Health Centre. Dr. Ware is the vice-chair of the federal task force providing guidance to the Canadian government as it prepares to introduce legislation to legalize marijuana this spring.
Dr. Ware praises Canada's intention to take a leadership role on the world stage to regulate cannabis.
"The model of prohibition has been unsuccessful in controlling cannabis use and in adequately identifying and preventing harm," he said. "It has also created an enormous black market that is impossible to regulate. I think this a very positive and important step globally."
In addition, invited speaker Dr. Tom Evans, Director of the Atlantic Pain Clinic in Moncton, will be delivering a presentation titled Opioids and Pain: a cautionary tale. Dr. Evans will join Dr. Ware in a panel discussion on the use of medical cannabis for pain control.
