Community BBQs Mark World Hepatitis Day on July 28

(Horizon) July 25, 2016 - Horizon Health Network will join organizations across Canada in the global effort to raise awareness about viral hepatitis on July 28, World Hepatitis Day. Community events will take place in Saint John and Fredericton.

Viral hepatitis affects more than half a million Canadians and in New Brunswick it is the most common reportable blood-borne infection. The virus is commonly spread by those who are unaware they have contracted it through exposure to contaminated blood or bodily fluids. Receiving the vaccine is the best way to prevent hepatitis B. Those who believe they are at risk for hepatitis are encouraged to contact a health care provider to be tested. Treatment is available.

Local public health and community partners are dedicated to raising awareness about viral hepatitis and informing the public of the options available for prevention, testing and treatment. Free community barbecues will take place in recognition of World Hepatitis Day on Thursday, July 28.

The barbecues are open to the public in the following locations:

  • Saint John - 11:00am - 1:00pm Corner of Waterloo and Cliff Street
  • Fredericton - 12:00pm - 1:30pm 65 Brunswick Street outside of the Victoria Health Centre

Community partners in the initiative include Waterloo Village, AIDS New Brunswick (Fredericton), AIDS Saint John, RECAP, Guardian Drugs and Public Health. Everyone is welcome to attend.
