Cardiac Anesthesiologists

Dr. Andrew Clark

Dr. Clark joined the NB Heart Centre at its inception in 1991. He received his medical degree from Leeds Medical School in England in 1978, and worked as a cottage hospital physician in Newfoundland until 1984, when he began Anesthesiology residency training at Dalhousie University. He was certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Anesthesiology in 1988. In 1998, he passed the National Board of Echocardiography's perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) exam. His interests include TEE & critical care.

Dr. Ashley O'Brien

Dr. Ashley O’Brien joined the NB Heart Centre as a staff anesthesiologist in 2010. He obtained his medical degree from Dalhousie Medical School in 2004. He completed his Anesthesiology training at Dalhousie as well. He was certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Anesthesiology in 2009. He completed a fellowship in cardiac anesthesia, cardiovascular critical care, and transesophageal echocardiography at the University of Toronto (St. Michael’s Hospital) in 2010.

Dr. David Hughes

Dr. David Hughes has been an anesthesiologist at the NB Heart Centre since 1991. He received his medical degree at the University of Toronto and his Anesthesiology specialty training at Dalhousie University. He was certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Anesthesiology in 1987. He completed further post-graduate training in anesthesiology at the University of Otago (New Zealand), in critical care at the University of Western Ontario, and in transesophageal echocardiography at St. Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
