Mango is an exciting community program that began in May 2002 to promote healthy eating and active living.
Mango dietitians work with volunteers and partners from 8 surrounding communities including: Baie Ste. Anne, Blackville, Eel Ground, Espenoopitij (Burnt Church), Metepenagiag (Red Bank), Miramichi, Neguac and Rogersville.
A number of initiatives are in place in the communities to support the Mango Program including:
The Eat Well! Restaurant Program
Making healthy choices when eating out can be difficult. For this reason, Mango started the Eat Well Restaurant Program. At participating restaurants, menu items are evaluated by the Mango dietitians and identified with a Mango symbol when the item is a healthy choice.
Go for 42! Mango Kids Fun Run
This initiative is targeted towards students from kindergarten to grade 8. In this challenge, the goal is for the students to run or walk 40km over the last 5 weeks of school.
This initiative is targeted at school children from kindergarten to grade 5 in school districts 9, 11 and 16. There are 23 participating schools. The children are asked to do a one week challenge 3 times per year. The challenges are health-related activities.
Mango Champion of the Community
This initiative recognizes and profiles members of our region who are living a healthy lifestyle according to Mango, and encourages eating well and being active, as well as encouraging others to do the same.
Biggest Loser Competition
This competition is offered in partnership between Mighty Miramichi and the Mango program. The goal of this initiative is to teach participants how to lose weight and keep it off by teaching them about good eating habits and physical activity. Participants can join by submitting a team of 4. The teams with highest per cent of body weight lost win prizes.
