FAQ

How do I become a volunteer with Horizon Health Network?

You will be asked to complete an application form and supply 2 (non-family member) references. After the department receives your completed application, you will be contacted for an interview. At the interview we will explore your accomplishments, talents, values, interests, what you would like to offer and what you hope to gain from your volunteer experience.

Where can I get an application form?

You can apply online or you can visit the Department of Volunteer Resources at your local facility for an application package.

What kind of references does a volunteer need?

Volunteers must provide references from 2 persons who have known them for at least 2 years (family relations excluded) or who know them in a professional context. References can include teachers, professors, supervisors, co-workers, friends, etc. References are confidential and should be returned to the volunteer resources department in a sealed envelope.

How old do I have to be before I can volunteer?

You must be in grade 9 or 15 years old.

Am I guaranteed a volunteer position if I apply?

Volunteer placement will depend on the needs of the facility and your skill set, preferences and availability.

What is the time commitment to volunteer with Horizon Health Network?

You will be asked for a commitment of 6 months to a year, volunteering once a week for 2-4 hours. (Length of shift depends on the assigned position).

Does Horizon Health Require Criminal Reference and Vulnerable Sector Checks?

Yes. Any volunteer over the age of 18 who is selected to volunteer with Horizon Health Network, will be asked to complete a criminal reference/vulnerable sector check.

At which times during the week do you require volunteers?

Volunteer programs are available 7 days a week. However, because the majority of services provided to patients are offered on weekdays, we have a greater need for volunteers during working hours on weekdays.

As a student, my course schedule changes every semester. If I'm a volunteer, can I change my volunteer schedule accordingly?

Yes. Schedules for volunteers can be changed based on the availabilities required in your assigned program.

What training, if any, do you offer your volunteers?

As a member of the volunteer team you will receive a general orientation along with program specific training. On an annual basis volunteers are required to complete mandatory learning modules. Volunteers are also offered other training opportunities based on areas of interests and the type of programs they are volunteering in.
